POOLS IN RESIDENTIAL CARE HOMES

More and more families and residents are demanding to have a pool as a service in residential care homes. This type of facility improves quality of life, as well as the physical and mental wellbeing of the elderly residents by way of different activities, commonly practised in groups. Below we are going to go into depth a bit more on the different benefits that pool therapies can offer.

Improved cardiovascular system and mobility.

The water offers a space where the body’s weight feels lighter so therefore people with mobility problems feel more secure. Because of this, they can do certain exercises that they wouldn’t be able to do outside the pool, as well as have longer therapy sessions.

The reduced physical overload and the prolonged exercise time can lead to improvement in balance and strength, as well as stimulating the heart. Additionally, it can reduce the aches and pains caused by exercise ‘on dry land’ as it reduces the feeling of one’s own weight.

A space for socialising and personal security.

As we’ve already mentioned, these activities are often done in groups. This is something which encourages interaction between the participants and it’s done in a more relaxed environment.

What’s more, doing these certain exercises that otherwise would be impossible to do, can boost self-esteem, confidence and security, which is a clear advantage if it can be applied to other areas of everyday life.

What exercises can be done?

Generally speaking, any exercises aimed at getting the body moving and improving joint mobility are deemed acceptable and appropriate to be carried out in the swimming pools in residential care homes. However, these activities must always be supervised by a team of medical professionals to guarantee the health and safety of the participants. Among some of the more common exercises we have:

  • Walking in the water
  • Pedalling in the water
  • Joint movements

Considering all of the above, a swimming pool in a residential care home is something really positive which brings only benefits and contributes to an increased happiness amongst the elderly residents.

Here at Innowater we wish to point out that, despite all the benefits that aquatic therapy can bring to elderly residents, providing the best quality water is also certainly a priority. Therefore, we recommend the salt water chlorinator as the best method for disinfecting the water because as well as being efficient and eco-friendly, it’s also people-friendly: it doesn’t cause skin irritation or discomfort unlike the chemical chlorinators.
