The price of chlorine for swimming pools goes up. And now what?

Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCI), commonly known as chlorine, is a solution applied in swimming pools for water disinfection. It is added directly to the pool, except in facilities that have salt chlorination systems, whereby the disinfectant agent is generated in the water through an electrolytic process. But, why when it was one of the most commonly used products for maintaining swimming pool water has the price gone up so much in recent years?

In 2017, a new European environmental law came into force, banning production systems based on mercury technology. As a result, chlorine production plants had to adapt to the new membrane technology, with contamination being greatly reduced.

Given this situation, the increase in the price of chlorine was inevitable. As there were fewer chlorine suppliers, the production of chlorine compounds decreased, generating significant price increases and with purchasers and users feeling the brunt of this price rise. Exporting it also generates significant expenses, since it cannot be transported by sea, therefore prices increase even further.

Advantages Salt Chlorination vs Traditional Chlorine

Innowater recommends using salt-water electrolysis systems to maintain the water in your pool, whether this is for domestic or industrial use. Salt chlorination is a method that offers numerous advantages compared with traditional chlorine. Below are a few of the most significant advantages:

  • Users do not handle chemical products therefore it is a much safer option.
  • It does not irritate the skin or eyes, since it has an optimal chlorine level and very low salinity levels.
  • A cost-effective investment in the long term, particularly with the rise in prices of traditional chlorine.

Innowater has a selection of salt chlorination systems to maintain swimming pool water and highly efficient dosing and control systems. If you would like more information about any of our products, please do not hesitate to contact us.
