Water’s pH level is fundamental for the good maintenance of a swimming pool. Chlorine is used to disinfect the water; therefore, it must be kept in the adequate amount for the pool. Both, pH and chlorine are essential and must be closely monitored to ensure that water is kept in perfect condition.
Water’s pH is measured to determine its acidity and alkalinity. This is achieved by determining the amount of free hydrogen ions. The scale for measuring pH ranges from 0 to 14 (0 being the most acidic and 14 being the most basic). The optimum pH value in a pool should be between 7,2 and 7,6. These values should be checked on a regular basis.
Chlorine’s value should be between 0.6 and 1 ppm (part per million). Natural chlorine, resulting from the electrolysis process in the salt chlorinator, is responsible for disinfecting the water and removing any bacteria or microbes that can potentially cause diseases.
When pH values are above 7.6, chlorine is unable to perform its disinfection function as it does not disinfect at basic pH values. If, on the opposite, the pH level is below 7.2 we face a pool with acidic pH, which can be dangerous by irritating the mucosa.
